If you are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, you may feel abortion is the best option for you.
When having an abortion, it is important to remember that you are not alone. It is estimated that one in four Australian women will have an abortion in their lifetime.
There are two types of abortion used to end a pregnancy:
- surgical abortion – which involves an operation, usually under a light sedation, to end the pregnancy
- medical abortion – which involves taking medications that cause a miscarriage and can be offered if you are less than nine weeks pregnant

Under the Abortion Law Reform Act 2019, no referrals for termination of pregnancy for the purpose of sex selection will be provided.
